Supporting the City ministry financially

Giving 2015

'For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich’
2 Corinthians 8:9

For over 50 years, God has blessed the proclamation of the Gospel from St Helen’s. In the late 1950s, 20–25 City workers were prompted to pray and work for a Gospel platform in the City. God has developed their ministry into all kinds of congregations and ministries far and wide. Over the years, God has rescued many City workers from death to life in Christ. He continues to do so.

The original vision of Christian City workers partnering together to reach the thousands and thousands of people of the City with the saving news of Jesus Christ is still a central and exciting part of St Helen’s ministry. Under God, our financial partnership continues to help people know Jesus Christ and make him known in the Square Mile.

Our partnership together enables the Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime meetings, the morning, lunchtime and evening City Bible studies, 1-2-1s, evangelistic events, Christianity Explored courses, the City Weekend and Summer School, and the training of full-time Gospel workers, both for the City and elsewhere.

The City ministry costs approximately 16% of the church annual budget (around £460k of £2.9m). This figure includes City staff costs and a contribution to the overall St Helen’s costs – training apprentices, buildings, publicity, website, etc.

Of the 400 people regularly involved in the City ministry, around 100 support it financially. Also, a significant amount of the total is given by a small number of individuals, who may choose not to, or may be unable to continue giving at this level.

We would therefore love to continue to broaden the financial partnership in this work. We hope you might consider your involvement in this ministry to reach the City with the Gospel.

WHY GIVE?

In response to God’s grace
God has shown his great love for sinful and unworthy people like us, in the life, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. We are to be like God – ready, not reluctant, givers, for God loves a cheerful giver.

In recognition of God’s gifts
Giving is not limited to financial giving. God has given us all we need to give generously, but not all of us can give financially. God wants us to be generous, not just with our money, but with our time, energy, skills, property and homes. If we have received God’s abundant grace, then we all have something to give generously.

HOW TO GIVE?

Abundantly
Paul stresses the abundant nature of God’s giving toward us, so that we may give abundantly in response,

God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Cor 9:8

The Old Testament commanded a tithe (10% of income). The New Testament is far more radical – we are to be generous givers of all we have. Some will give far more than 10% of their income, others less.

Thoughtfully
Each person should give what they have decided in their heart to give. We need to think carefully about what resources we have been given, what our responsibilities are, and how we can give money in the most effective way.

Joyfully
God loves a cheerful giver. It’s easy to give for the wrong reasons – to relieve our guilt, to avoid other avenues of Christian service, to be seen to be generous by others, etc. Paul tells us that God loves a joyful and big-hearted response to all that he has lavished on us.
